The map on the browser Dashboard lets you view Spots' saved locations, filter the Spots displayed and open their details. The map point and the latest read-event details represent different things. The map does not confirm a device's current physical location.
Open the map
In the browser's main menu, select Dashboard → Dashboard and find the Map panel. You need read permission for the Spots you want to view. Map filters do not grant additional permissions.
If the panel is missing from your current layout, see managing Dashboard panels and layouts.
Which Spots appear on the map?
The map loads Spots that you have permission to view and that have fixed coordinate data saved to the Spot. If both fixed coordinates are missing, a read-event location alone will not bring the Spot onto this map. To ensure a reliable map point, set both latitude and longitude as described in Spot location and default image.
The map's data query does not filter Spots by status. A Spot with the status Inactive, Faulty or Deleted may also appear if its data is still stored, it meets the location requirement and you have read permission. Appearing on the map therefore does not mean that the device is in use.
The Map views on Android and iOS use a different data query. In those views, the location can also come from a read-event, and Spots with the status Deleted are excluded. A Spot visible on mobile may therefore be missing from the browser Dashboard map.
Filter the Spots displayed
Click the magnifying glass icon in the Map panel's header. The Select spot, Select folder and Search by customer name controls appear below it. Select one or more items in the fields you want to use.
Selections within the same field are alternatives: selecting two Spots displays both if they are included in the loaded map data. Filters in different fields apply together. If you select a Spot and a customer, the Spot must also belong to a folder associated with the selected customer. The customer filter uses the customer associated with the Spot's own folder; without this customer association, the Spot does not match the customer filter.
The folder filter has a limitation: if the selected folder has subfolders, it includes the folders beneath it that have no further subfolders. Spots belonging directly to the selected parent folder or intermediate folders are then excluded. If the folder has no subfolders, the filter applies to its own Spots. When looking for a Spot belonging directly to a parent folder, clear the folder filter and use the Spot selection.
Select Clear filters in the filter row to remove all three filters and fit the view to the loaded points. The filters work on data that has already been loaded: clearing them does not fetch missing Spots from the server. Clicking the magnifying glass again only hides the filter row; it does not clear your selections.
Find an area and open a point's details
Enter an address in the Search by address field above the map and select the correct address suggestion. The map moves to that area. The address search does not change a Spot's saved location or clear any active filters.
The Landmark visibility slider next to the address search changes the detail shown on the base map. The default position on the left shows the fewest landmarks, the middle position adds more, and the position on the right shows the base map without these visibility restrictions. This selection does not change Spot points or their details.
Nearby points are grouped on the map. Zoom in on the area to see individual markers. You can also zoom by holding down Ctrl and scrolling the mouse wheel over the map.
Click an individual marker. The info window shows the Spot's name, folder, the tag's printed number if available, and Last read-events:. Clicking the Spot's name opens its details. The folder name and the tag's printed number open their respective details. Editing the details requires the relevant edit permissions separately.
Distinguish the map point from read-event details
When both fixed coordinates have been set for a Spot, the map point uses them. A new read-event in another location does not move this fixed point.
Last read-events: shows the user and time of one event. The event is selected as the most recent based on its creation time, but the info window displays that event's update time. The time may change, for example, if location details are added to the event later. It is not the time when the fixed location was saved or measured. If there is no read-event, the user and time are left blank.
To find out where and when a tag has been read, view the events separately as described in Spot read-events on the map. The location saved to an event is also historical information.
Check the result or investigate a missing point
- Remove the map filters by selecting Clear filters.
- Reload the browser page if the Spot's location, folder, customer or read-event details have changed. Automatic updates to task and service request lists do not update the map.
- Open the Spot's details by clicking its name in the marker's info window, and compare the map point with the Spot's fixed location. View read-event times and coordinates separately.
- If the point is still missing, check that you have read permission for the Spot and that both fixed coordinates have been saved. Also check that the Spot is not excluded by a folder or customer filter.
Viewing the map, filtering it, searching for an address and changing landmark visibility do not change a Spot's location, status or read-event history.
