You can mark the locations of existing Spots on a site map, such as a building floor plan. Each marker links the Spot to the selected level and provides access to its details. You can also add text and shapes to the map.
Before you begin
Add map markers in the browser as an admin user. A Manager user can view site maps but cannot enter map editing mode. A Spot's viewing permissions determine whether its marker is visible to a user.
You need a site, a level within that site, a map image attached to the level, and Spots that have already been created. Creating a site, a level and a map image is described in How do I use sites and levels in site maps?
Placing a Spot on a site map saves its position on the map image. It does not change the Spot's geographical coordinates or move it to another folder. The Map views on Android and iOS use the Spot's location coordinates; moving its icon on a site map does not move its marker in those views.
Select a site and level
- Open Assets, devices, tools from the browser navigation and select the Site Maps tab.
- Select the correct site from the Sites list on the left. Its default level opens.
- Select the level you want from the structure that opens beneath the site. Check the map image to make sure it shows the correct area.
- Click the Mode: Viewing button above the map. Its label changes to Mode: Editing, and the map toolbar appears. If you have hidden the toolbar, you can bring it back with the Show toolbar button.
Add and place Spots
- Select Add > Add spot from the map toolbar.
- Select one or more existing Spots in the form's Select spot field. You can search for them by name, for example. Deleted Spots are not offered in the standard search.
- Select an icon from the icon list. Type in the Select an icon field to filter icons by name, then click the icon you want.
- Click the form's Add button. A separate marker using the same icon is created for each selected Spot.
- Drag the icons to the correct positions on the map. They initially appear in the same place, so markers for multiple Spots may overlap. Use the corner handles of a selected marker to resize it and the rotation handle above it to change its orientation.
Add spot does not create a new Spot. A level can have only one marker for each Spot. If a Spot is already on the map, move its existing marker. You can mark the same Spot on different levels.
You can zoom in and out using the mouse wheel. To pan the map, hold down the Alt key and the left mouse button while dragging.
Add text and shapes to the map
Select Add > Add text from the toolbar if you want to name an area, for example. The text Text appears on the map. Select it and click it again to enter your own text.
Select Add > Add shape, then select Add rectangle, Add circle or Add triangle from its submenu. Drag the shape into place and resize it using the handles.
Text and shapes are map annotations. They are not linked to a Spot and do not open Spot details. The name shown alongside a Spot's icon, however, comes from the Spot's details.
Select the element you want to edit and use Edit > Change color on the toolbar to change the color of text or a shape. Edit > Change opacity adjusts the visibility of the selected element. Although the slider is named Opacity, a value of 0 makes the element invisible and 100 makes it fully opaque.
Save and check the result
Click Save on the map toolbar. This saves the selected level's map elements and their links to Spots, then reloads the map. The form's Add button or leaving editing mode does not replace this save action.
Wait for the success notification and check the reloaded map. Open another level and return to the level you saved: make sure the icons, positions, text and shapes have been retained. After saving, Spot names also appear alongside the icons.
If saving fails, do not assume your changes have been retained. In particular, check that you have not added two markers for the same Spot on the same level. Remove the extra marker and save again.
Refresh reloads the map stored on the server and discards unsaved changes to elements. Switching levels and returning to viewing mode with the Mode: Editing button also reload the map. Save before these actions if you want to keep your changes.
Open Spot details and consider visibility
After saving, switch to viewing mode with the Mode: Editing button. Hover over a Spot's icon to see a preview of its details, or click the icon to open the Spot's details form. Editing a Spot's details requires separate permission; viewing the map does not grant editing permission.
Markers for Spots that a user does not have permission to view are hidden from the map. Different users may therefore see different markers on the same level. If a marker is missing, check that you are on the correct level, that the map has been saved, and that you have permission to view the Spot. Map text and shapes do not follow an individual Spot's viewing permissions: do not use them to display Spot information intended to be restricted to certain users.
Remove a map marker
In editing mode, select the icon, text or shape you want to remove, then select Edit > Remove element from the toolbar. Finally, click Save and check that the element has been removed by reopening the level.
Removing a Spot's icon removes its map marker. It does not delete the Spot itself or its details, or change its status.
If you remove all elements from a level and save an empty map, the map markers may disappear from view even though the previous links between Spots and the level remain saved. Checking an empty map therefore does not confirm that all links have been removed. If you also need confirmation that the links have been removed, ask Spotilla support to check the situation.
