In the browser's Site Maps view, you can place an existing Spot's icon on an image, such as a building's floor plan. Users can open the Spot's details through the saved icon.
Before you start
You need a saved Spot, a site and a level displaying a floor plan. Use a PNG or JPEG image, for example. If needed, see the instructions for creating a new Spot and setting up sites, levels and a map image.
Editing the map is an administrator function. A manager user can view the site map but cannot enter editing mode. Whether a user can see a Spot or edit its details depends separately on their permissions. Placing a Spot on the map does not grant users any new permissions to that Spot.
A Spot's folder and its position on the floor plan are separate things. The folder determines the Spot's position in the register's folder tree and affects permissions. The map marker indicates a position you select manually on the level's image: it does not create a new Spot, move the Spot to a folder or change its geographical location.
Open the correct floor plan
- From the browser menu, open Assets and content → Assets, devices, tools and select the Site Maps tab on the page.
- Select a site from the Sites list on the left. Its default level opens.
- Select the level you want from the site and level tree. Check that the correct floor plan is displayed.
- Click the Mode: Viewing button at the top of the map. Its label changes to Mode: Editing, and the map toolbar opens. If you have hidden the toolbar, open it with the Show toolbar button.
You can zoom the floor plan with the mouse wheel. To pan the map view, hold down the Alt key and the left mouse button, then drag.
Select a Spot and place the icon
- From the map toolbar, select Add → Add spot.
- In the form's Select spot field, select one or more existing Spots. You can search for a Spot by name.
- Select an icon by clicking it in the icon list. You can filter the list by typing in the Select an icon field, which has the placeholder Search for an icon by name. Entering search text alone does not select an icon.
- Click the form's Add button.
- Drag the icon to the correct position on the floor plan. Select the icon and, if needed, resize it using the handles on the selection frame.
If you selected multiple Spots, the same icon is added for each at the same starting position. The icons may overlap, so move each one separately. The same Spot can appear on different levels, but it cannot be saved twice on the same level.
Deactivated Spots are excluded from the selection list. If a Spot is missing, check the search term, the Spot's status and your viewing permissions.
Save and check the result
- Click the Save button on the map toolbar. This saves the map markers for the selected level. This is separate from saving the site, the level's details or the floor plan image file.
- Wait for the notification Canvas is updated successfully and for the map to reload.
- Click the Mode: Editing button to return to viewing mode.
- Check the icon's position and the Spot name displayed alongside it. Click the icon and check the Spot details that open to confirm that you selected the correct device.
Adding and dragging icons does not save the changes yet. Save before switching sites, levels or viewing/editing modes: these actions reload the map. The toolbar's Refresh button also loads the saved map and discards unsaved changes.
If saving fails, check, among other things, that you have not added the same Spot twice to the same level. Correct the markers and save again. Simply seeing the icon before a successful save does not confirm that the change will persist.
Change or remove a map marker
Open editing mode, select the icon and drag it to a new position or resize it. Remove the selected marker from the map toolbar using Edit → Remove element. Finally, save using the map's Save button.
Removing the icon removes the drawing element, not the Spot itself or its tasks and files. If you remove all map elements from a level, previous associations between Spots and the level may remain saved even though the image looks empty. An empty map alone therefore does not confirm that all map associations have been removed.
You can also add annotations from the map toolbar using Add → Add text or Add → Add shape. These are labels and drawings on the floor plan; they do not create Spots or open Spot details. These annotations are also saved using the map's Save button.
The floor plan and the mobile map
Map on Android and iOS uses the Spot's geographical location data. Placing a Spot on a floor plan does not add or move it there. The geographical location is set separately: see setting a Spot's location.
On mobile, you can also find a Spot using Browse folders and spots in the Home view by opening the folder path and selecting the Spot. See viewing Spot details on mobile.
